Alix Tregenza
British Council
Alix is qualified as a primary school teacher specializing in history and geography at Lancaster University in the United Kingdom. After ten years teaching in the north-west of England and taking additional qualifications in special-needs teaching, she moved to Spain.
At present, Alix works at the British Council Bilbao and in local schools, teaching a range of ages and abilities but focusing on the very young learners. In addition to her teaching roles, she is actively involved in teacher training, particularly the use of phonics.

Are you a newly qualified teacher who has been asked to teach phonics? Or have you been teaching for a while and are interested in the subject? Well, come along to the session and find out what synthetic phonic’s is and how to teach it. The session will be very practical and offer lots of activities to use in the classroom.
Karina Rose Mahan
University of South-Eastern Norway
Karina Rose Mahan is a Norwegian-American linguist. She is currently taking her Ph.D. in English education at the University of South-Eastern Norway. Her fields of interest include Second Language Learning (SLL), English didactics, Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), scaffolding and teacher education.

Reading and Writing English in CLIL
Karina will discuss how we can tackle reading and writing in EFL in content classrooms. The presentation will introduce ‘pluriliteracies’: the idea that there are several ways of reading and writing depending on the subject. She will give examples from a study that was conducted on a CLIL 9th grade classroom in Norway, and give ideas to content teachers who struggle with this in their own classroom.
Raquel Louro
Peñacorada International School
Raquel grew up in the US and has a degree in Elementary Education and Special Education from Seton Hall University. She has worked in a variety of different classroom environments in New Jersey and participated in several workshops that have made her grow as a professional. In 2001, she moved to León and started working in Peñacorada International School. She has worked with different age groups and taught a variety of subjects. In 2016, she went back to the US and worked for a year with Secondary students and became part of different teachers associations. In the last few years she has trained become a Phonics specialist creating different materials for the classroom and attending workshops on this matter.

Planning, Developing and Creating Materials for a Phonics Classroom
Developing and planning a Phonics class doesn´t have to be difficult or tedious when using the appropriate materials. Literacy skills will be developed at an early age when a routine in phonics is developed throughout the classroom. The use of visual aids and hands on activities must play an important role in each lesson planned. Therefore, the right tools must be presented to each student in order for Literacy to take place.
Rebecca Place
British Council
Rebecca has worked in EFL for over 30 years as teacher, trainer, materials writer, academy co-owner, translator and storyteller. She is currently a teacher-trainer at the British Council Bilbao and is actively involved with TESOL-SPAIN as part of the Media Team. When not at the chalk-face, she is a firm fan of Jose Saramago, Julian Barnes and Haruki Murakami.

Really Reading
10 page-turning activities to get young learners really reading. We will look at some well-thumbed theories behind the skill of reading, flick through the spin-offs an avid reader enjoys, browse some potential, but possibly unexpected classroom reading materials, dip into some classroom dynamics related to reading and devour an anthology of exercises and games fit for all types of reader.
Shawn Redwood
Comillas Pontifical University
Shawn has been teaching English as a Foreign Language for more than 14 years in Spain. His principal areas of interest are bilingual and international education, as well as CLIL in both Primary and Secondary, visual literacy and implementing authentic material into the EFL classroom. He is currently the Coordinator of Modern Languages at Comillas Pontifical University.
Talk – Creating Content out of Context
It would be nice if a textbook provided activities based on real-world experiences, especially with changes in learning and teaching styles. Creating these types of activities on your own can be time-consuming, but it does make lesson planning faster and more efficient. The purpose of this workshop is to demonstrate how to create activities that are both useful and practical for your students.
